Precisis AG have now presented its newest development at the annual convention of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Charlotte, USA together with scientists from DKFZ and Best Theratronics. The collimator, marketed as CobRaLeaf® by Precisis AG is a mechanical radiation collimator which now makes it possible, for the first time, to precisely customize the beam to the tumor shape in cobalt machines.
In contrast to Linear accelorators (LINAC), Cobalt machines do not rely on stable power supply and do tolerate voltage fluctuations. With CobRaLeaf®, their beam can now be customized to the shape of the tumor. This improves the impact on the cancerous tissue while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. This high precision treatment technique in radiotherapy was exclusive to wealthy healthcare infrastructures, but can now be offered to a much wider range of patients.
The novel collimator called consists of many closely arranged, moveable metal leaves and can be mounted on existing cobalt machines.
Precisis AG and DKFZ have filed to patents on the CobRaLeaf® and scientific publication on upcoming conferences in Physics and Medicine will be following. During the development, the team worked closely with Best Theratronics, worlds largest manufacturer of Cobalt-60 teletherapy devices.
“Progress in medicine does not necessarily have to be expensive. On the contrary, wide-spread use of economically reasonable treatment devices may save more lives than isolated high-end devices,” says Dr. Angela Liedler, president of Precisis. Approximately 2,000 hospitals in the third world use cobalt-60 machines and could benefit from CobRaLeaf. Series production of the collimator will start in 2013. Prof. Dr. rer. nat.
