The Best of European Ladies’ Golf crowns world’s number three Suzann Pettersen
At 11 a.m. on Sunday the tournament organizers took the decision to reduce the event from 72 to 54 holes as many of the fairways and greens were flooded after heavy rainfall, making the course unplayable. With the fourth round cancelled, the results at the end of round three were final. Suzann Pettersen’s (NOR) winning total of 194, 22-under-par, at the Deutsche Bank Ladies’ Swiss Open 2008 nevertheless was outstanding. It broke the Ladies European Tour’s record for the lowest winning 54-hole aggregate. This previously stood at 190 (-17), having been set by Karine Icher (FRA) in 2004. Pettersen revealed that she had been aiming to go much lower than that and beat Laura Davies’ (ENG) record of 25-under for 72 holes, set in 1995. “I was going to try to get to 30; that was my aim from the last couple of days. I would have had to have played really well today if that was the case but I think it was possible,” she said. “If it’s not playable it’s not playable. That’s what happens when you play outdoor sport every now and again.“ With the results standing as they were at the end of the third round, Pettersen took her Ladies European Tour title by a six stroke margin over South Korean teenager Amy Yang taking second on 16-under-par. Gwladys Nocera (FRA), who broke her own course record with a ten-under 62 in the third round, finished third on 15- under, with Lotta Wahlin (SWE) three shots further back in fourth. Pettersen, the world number three, led the way with rounds of 67, 63 and 64 to earn the first prize of Euro 78,500. She dedicated her prize to a 24-year-old family friend who passed away on Monday. Pettersen will take increased confidence back to America ahead of her defense of the LPGA Championship in a fortnight. In finishing second, Yang posted her career best finish since winning in 2006 as a 16-year-old amateur. This earned her the lead on the moneylist of the Ladies European Tour and she also collected an Omega watch for her hole-in-one. “Suzann is a great player and with a six shot difference it would have been really difficult to beat her”, said Yang. Alexandra Armas, Executive Director of the LET, added: “I think it’s been a fantastic week of scoring. There are a lot of birdies out there and I think a lot of players would have gone out strong to try and move up the leader board. We can’t help the weather.” Hanns Michael Hölz, Tournament Director and Managing Director Deutsche Bank added: “Normally the Ticino region is known as the sunny terrace of Switzerland but you cannot influence nature. However, it was a great sports event.“ Organizing an event of this magnitude would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners and sponsors, such as OMEGA, Zurich Financial Services, Hugo Boss, Mercedes-Benz, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Ticino Turismo, Golf Gerre Losone, Association Suisse de Golf, the Ladies European Tour and especially all the volunteers. Ladies’ golf in Losone saw distinct rise in public interest in comparison to the previous two years, and by the overall response from the media worldwide. The presence of thousands of spectators and guests speaks for itself as do more than 1000 minutes TV coverage broadcast each across four continents. Together with an extremely improved supporting programme, the Deutsche Bank Ladies' Swiss Open strengthens its position as a lighthouse event on the Ladies European Tour. One more time a great Golf Event with GreenSports Professional Golf Events.
