MODBUS interface available for the whole range of Lika's DRIVECOD rotary actuators

Lika Electronic extends the range of fieldbus interfaces for its intelligent DRIVECOD rotary actuators. Modbus RTU over RS-485 protocol interface is today available for the whole RD- series positioning units along with Profibus-DP and CANopen DS301 protocols to allow direct and easy integration with a wide variety of PLCs, microcontrollers, terminals, operator panels, fieldbuses and supervising computers. Lika DRIVECOD rotary actuators are Slave devices and implement the Modbus application protocol (level 7 of OSI model) and the “Modbus over Serial Line” protocol (levels 1 & 2 of OSI model).
Modbus RTU is a serial communication open protocol developed in the seventies of the last century by Modicon which is now widely used in the industry and has become a standard for device-to-device communication in several industrial automation systems. It allows for communication between up to 247 nodes in a true multi-drop network over a serial EIA-485 physical layer, ensuring high speeds and long distances. The Modbus Serial Line protocol is a Master – Slaves protocol. One only Master is connected to the bus and one or several Slave nodes are also connected to the same serial bus. A Modbus communication is always initiated by the Master. The Slave nodes will never transmit data without receiving a request from the Master node. MODBUS RTU messages (registers) are simple data strings with 16-bit CRC (Cyclic Redundant Checksum for error checking). The simplicity of these messages is to ensure reliability.
The main reasons behind such large implementation and diffusion of the Modbus interface are: 1) Modbus bases on RS-485/RS-232 serial communication which is well established and universally supported; 2) it is basic yet complete, flexible and most of all reliable; 3) it is really simple to implement and easy-to-use; 4) it is significantly more inexpensive to deploy than other industrial fieldbus protocols and requires less resources; 5) it is open and can be used royalty-free.
DRIVECOD rotary actuators with Modbus RTU come with a program expressly developed and released by Lika Electronic: it allows the operator to set the working parameters of the device; control manually some movements and functions; and monitor the work cycles of the unit. The program is supplied for free and can be installed in any PC fitted with a Windows operating system (Windows XP or later). In this way you can easily and quickly programme, set up and start the positioning unit even before mounting at your convenience.
It is noteworthy that RD1xA series Profibus and CANopen models are further equipped with a RS-232 service interface to ease installation and debug.
Modbus interface will be soon available also for absolute rotary encoders.
